Title: An Algebraist Listens to Music
Algebraists love patterns and generalization! Music theory provides a rich source of patterns. In this talk we interpret some of these patterns using mathematical notions and then ask if we can find alternative divisions of the octave that preserve key patterns in Western tonal music. We'll touch upon topics from college algebra (logarithmic scales) to abstract algebra (finite cyclic groups). We'll also listen as we learn.
