Symmetries of Surfaces
Abstract: In this talk, I will give a gentle introduction to surfaces and their associated mapping class groups. I will then discuss some of the different mathematical frameworks we can use as a lens through which to study surfaces, from topology and geometry to algebra and combinatorics. Along the way we will see how these different perspectives often come together in beautiful and sometimes unexpected ways.
