Dr. Anthony Fernandes from UNC-Charlotte will speak on Preparing Future Mathematics Teachers to Work with English Learners
North Carolina is one of five states that have seen the fastest growth of English learners in schools. English learners are learning new mathematical content as they simultaneously develop English proficiency. Dr. Fernandes will discuss his research related to multimodal communication of English learners and using task-based interviews to prepare teachers to work with these students. He will also present recent results from research on beliefs that preservice teachers have about mathematics and language in the context of teaching English learners.
