Alternative (Fredholm's Version)
Abstract: It is often said, somewhat in jest and somewhat in truth, that all of pure mathematics boils down to linear algebra. In this talk, we'll explore the Fredholm Alternative, which provides a simple and surprisingly useful characterization of the possible solution sets to certain types of linear equations. We'll prove the Fredholm Alternative for matrices using some linear algebra, and then see how it can be generalized to more general types of linear operators and applied to a variety of problems.
