Colloquium on April 19: John Wagaman, Western Carolina University: Uses of Applied Statistics in Math Placement and Volleyball Skill Evaluation

Join us at 3 PM on Friday, April 19, in Walker 103A for a talk by Dr. John Wagaman from Western Carolina University.  Dr. Wagaman will speak on

Uses of Applied Statistics in Math Placement and Volleyball Skill Evaluation

This talk will allocate its focus to two different areas in which the presenter has recently worked and continues to work.  In the first part, WCU’s previous and current math placement models for students without prior mathematics credit will be presented, as well as results from a recent pilot study on the implementation of ALEKS as an indicator of mathematics preparedness for and success in college algebra.  In the second part, the presenter, as a statistician and a nationally-certified volleyball coach, will illustrate some ways in which those skill sets intersect, in particular, concepts from data preparation, basic statistics and probability are used to revise existing metrics that evaluate volleyball serving and serve receive passing.
