Scholarship Requirements

Paul B. Patterson Scholarship (Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Departments)

The Paul B. Patterson Scholarship was established in honor of the late Professor Patterson, a former Chairperson of the Mathematics Department at Appalachian. This scholarship is intended to recognize a promising entering freshman majoring in the departments of mathematical sciences or computer science at Appalachian. Candidates for the scholarship are restricted to high school seniors. Qualified students will be selected from those who indicate on their application for admission that they intend to major in mathematics, computer science or actuarial science. and who indicate on the admission application that they wish to be considered for scholarships.

Palmer Math Transfer Fund (Mathematical Sciences Department)

The Palmer Math Transfer Fund is intended to recognize a promising entering NC transfer student majoring in the department of mathematical sciences at Appalachian. Candidates for the scholarship are restricted to students from an NC Community College. Qualified students may apply directly to the Scholarship Committee by submitting one recommendation letter from a math instructor and current transcripts.

G.T. Buckland Scholarship (Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Departments)

The G.T. Buckland Scholarship was established in 1978 to honor Professor Buckland at the time of his retirement from the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The distinguishing objectives of this scholarship include the recognition and encouragement of outstanding achievement in the department of mathematical sciences. Accordingly, this award is presented to a rising junior or senior who has completed with distinction the calculus sequence and at least four other courses in the Department. Candidates may be nominated by departmental faculty members or through the Mathematics Honor Society (Pi Mu Epsilon). Applications must be supported by a letter of recommendation from at least one faculty member.

Inez Harris Mathematics Education Scholarship (Mathematical Sciences Department)

The Inez Harris Scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Sperling, a retired high school mathematics teacher and Appalachian alumna (1934) from Shelby, NC. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage excellence in the teaching of mathematics at the high school level by attracting quality students to the mathematics education program at ASU. Candidates for this scholarship must be at the point in their program of doing student teaching during the coming academic year. Eligible students may be nominated by an Appalachian faculty member or may make direct application to the Scholarship Committee. Applications must be supported by a letter of recommendation from at least one faculty member.

Taylor Memorial Scholarship (Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Departments)

The John W. Taylor and Mary L. Taylor Memorial Scholarship is intended to encourage rising juniors or seniors in the mathematical sciences or computer science departments. Applicants should:

  1. Be a rising junior or senior.
  2. Be a full-time student majoring in Math/Computer Science.
  3. Demonstrate the need for financial support. A completed Financial Aid Form (FAF) must be on file with the Office of Financial Aid.
  4. Demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement (3.25 GPA desirable).

Preference is given to male applicants. The scholarship can be renewed upon verification of continued satisfactory academic achievement.

Edith A. Goodman Memorial Scholarship (Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Departments)

The Edith A. Goodman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1996 by Drs. Billie and Ted Goodman in memory of their daughter. Scholarship recipients must be rising juniors or seniors majoring in the Mathematical Sciences department and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to female applicants.

Jonathan K. Perryman Memorial Scholarship (College of Arts and Sciences)

This endowed scholarship is established as a memorial to Jonathan K. Perryman, a 1966 chemistry alumnus of Appalachian. The scholarship guidelines specify that applicants must be rising juniors or seniors majoring in one of the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics. Recipients must demonstrate satisfactory academic achievement by having and maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. In addition, recipients must be full-time students with a course load of at least 12 semester hours. The award is directed to be renewable based upon verification of satisfactory academic performance as evidenced by maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and continuation of progress toward a degree in one of the majors named above. The Office of the Dean of the  College of Arts and Sciences collects applications and nominations and then conducts the selection process in accordance with established guidelines.

Richard A. Thomas Memorial Scholarship (College of Arts and Sciences)

This endowed scholarship is established as a memorial to Richard A. Thomas. The scholarship guidelines specify that applicants must demonstrate a verifiable need for financial support and that a financial aid form must be on file.

Applicants must have completed the freshman year at Appalachian and must be pursuing a major within the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, applicants must display success and progress in academics, leadership potential, and co-curricular activities.

The award is directed to be renewable based upon reapplication and reselection. Mrs. Alice T. Thomas, the donor who established this scholarship endowment, would genuinely appreciate a letter from scholarship recipients detailing their background and ambitions. The Office of the Dean of the  College of Arts and Sciences collects applications and nominations and then conducts the selection process in accordance with established guidelines.

Glaxo Wellcome Women in Science Scholarship (College of Arts and Sciences)

The Glaxo Foundation has established an endowment which makes available two $1000 scholarships for full-time women students at Appalachian who are majoring in and planning a career in the sciences. The purpose of the endowment is to recognize outstanding scholarship, to provide an incentive for women science students to enter the science profession, and to provide students with a woman scientist mentor at Glaxo.

The award is directed to be renewable based upon reapplication, reselection, and verification of satisfactory academic performance (3.0 grade point average). Preference in the awarding of this scholarship should accrue to female freshman applicants who would likely be eligible to receive the award in subsequent years. Second preference would be for sophomores, then juniors and seniors who have not received awards in previous years. The student's grade point average must remain at 3.0 or better to be eligible to continue receiving the award, and Glaxo Scholars who remain eligible will be given preference in receiving the award in subsequent years. The Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences collects applications and nominations and then conducts the selection process in accordance with established guidelines.
